When using an appositive or interrupting information, it is most often separated by commas. Â Therefore, sentence one is not correct. Â To correctly use dashes, one should use them to add emphasis for an interruption or a change of thought. Â That means the second sentence (after cramming...) is correct. Â In the 4th and 5th sentences, the commas are misplaced. Â The third sentence used the commas correctly to separate the combining sentences with the coordinating conjunction (but) as well as the appositive, which starts with 'who'. Â Added note: appositives start with: who, which, and that. Â
