Most people are familiar with the work of the great mathematicians of ancient Greece and Rome, such as Archimedes, Euclid, Pythagoras, and Plato. However, a great deal of important work in arithmetic, geometry, algebra, number theory, and logic was carried out by scholars working in Egypt, Persia, India, and China. For example, the concept of zero was first developed in India, and positional numbering systems (like our own decimal system) were developed and used in China, India, and the Middle East long before they made their way to Europe.

Read about the work of some mathematician (such as Al-Khowarizmi) from these or other places, and write a paper describing his or her contributions to mathematics, logic, and (ultimately) computer science.

Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi is a renowned scholar of Islamic origin. He was born as a Persian and contributed to science immensely. Many of his works were translated and worked upon extensively in Europe. Some of his works and contributions to science generally include the following:

1. He formulated the idea of the algorithm in mathematics. This is a fundamental part of computer science.

2. His work on algebra concept is considered one of the essential parts of modern science.

3. Through his work, he had great impacts on knowledge of astronomy. By which he was able to formulate calendars, real positions of the sun, moon, and planets, construction of sundials, and many more.
